The death nail to ambition 28 May, 2009

Today I feel signalled the death nail for ordinary people to get into Parliament, from now on it will be just as before, those paid for by the union barons, and the independently wealthy.
If we were ever in doubt who holds the real power in this country, as it was in the days of Lord beaverbrook, so it is today, in the hands of a select few unaccountable union barons.

A further clue to Labour in opposition 26 May, 2009

There once was a day (not so long ago) that I was used to hearing the Conservative spokesman coming on the nightly news rebutting/refuting whatever proposal the Labour government had just come up with. often with some merit. More often than not, the rebuttal was rather frivolous, just fulfilling their role of the peoples loyal opposing. I.e. opposition, for opposition sake.
O how the tables have turned, when David Cameron, still leader of the official opposing (for the moment anyway) comes up with dramatic and tough and fundamental reforms to government not seen in decades by the Conservative party The best Labours Justice Secretary Jack Straw can say is “it’s not new” and the LD’s it’s not radical enough.
Well I have something to say to you Mr Straw, you’ve had 12 years for reform, you have not only let us down by squandering your chance, but destroyed a great nation. And to the LD’s I say, concentrate on your council’s that are the highest taxing and the most illiberal, O and about reforming Party financing, what about the criminal you accepted £2,500,000 of stolen money from and have refused to pay back?

In defence of Hazel 15 May, 2009

Much has been said over the last week about MP’s abusing the their expenses. I have however reserved judgment on my local MP Hazel Blears, until the full details became/were made public.
Sadly, though being physically tiny, but tall in character, it has become abundantly clear that she has been squeezed between the daily telegraph acting as judge jury and executioner, and number 10 seeking to settle scores with its own side.
Why do I say this you may ask, after all not only am I not a Labour supporter, nor have I or would I vote for her. Just having watched her over the last few years, being  a principled and a moral MP, and I had full faith before the full details became apparent, that nothing improper would come out about Hazel. It may not have been wise what she did, but it was not improper, and certainly not illegal. Lets see Gordon pay back his £6000 cleaning bill. It’s a mark of the women that she was of the first willing to pay it back when others kept their hands firmly in their own pockets.
Hazel Blears may be a socialist, and I do hold that against her, but she is a decent, hard working, honest and upstanding public servant who deserves our support.

Just like we get the representatives we vote for, if we hound out good people like her, the next generation of politicians could be far worse. We already have a democratic deficit, let as not make it worse. By all means we must right wrongs, and weed out the corrupt, but lets mend what is still one of the worlds best systems, not break it.

So Labour fail to learn from previous mistakes. Obviously the fact that, last time Labour treated the people of Greater Manchester like guinea pigs, 80%+ of us wisely said a big fat NO! I highly doubt that even 20% of the wise people of greater Manchester will be seduced this time.
